Where to Re-use, Repair & Recycle - for nature, climate & community

on Wed, 05/05/2021 - 3:32pm

Sustainable Wantage & The Mix have created a 'repair and re-use' tool and map, designed to help you find over 40 local resources that will save you money, reduce landfill and give household items a new lease of life.

Wantage residents will now find it easier to do their bit to help the planet thanks to a new mapping project launching this May. The ‘Who, What, Where of Reuse and Repair’ is an online and print map that provides a wealth of information on where belongings can be repaired or passed on to be reused. Sustainable Wantage, an award-winning community action group, have created the map with the support of a grant from Wantage Town Council. From a long list of items ranging from old duvets and shoes to preloved jewellery, electronic items and furniture, using the map will help people to cut down waste, save money and also support local businesses and charities.

Jo Harvey, manager of Sustainable Wantage’s community space ‘The Mix’, explains: “Everyone is aware that we need to conserve the Earth’s fragile resources and to cut down on waste and carbon emissions. One of the best ways we can do this is by keeping things in the system – buying second-hand, fixing things where we can and disposing of unwanted possessions in a way that extends their life by being upcycled, repaired and reused. This map gives people who live in Wantage, Grove and the surrounding villages access to the information they need to do this easily. Local estate agents will give the map to people moving into the area, so they know where these resources are right from the start. To make it even easier, stickers will also be displayed in the windows of participating local shops and businesses. It’s another example of what a great community Wantage is. We hope that our scheme can act as a template for other community action groups in other local towns and we can build a network of all the places where everyone can reuse and repair!”
