Dear Friends,

During the last week of Lent there was a disastrous fire at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. It was a reminder of the fire 35 years ago at York Minster which resulted from an “act of God”, a lightning strike, whilst at Notre Dame the cause was reported as an electrical fault. Great national shock, expressions of grief and amazing financial support have followed with reports emphasising the architectural importance of the Paris skyline and the tourist industry. The most notable spiritual event was the ringing of church bells across France 24 hours after the fire.

We should remind ourselves, however, that Jesus put little store by buildings. The Church was established for people and the buildings came much later. Whilst we have the responsibility to love and look after our historic churches, let us not forget that it is our communities and not the stones that should always take precedence.

Spring is here. Hallelujah!
