on Tue, 23/07/2019 - 8:05am

Highways England has announced that the A34 will see a number of safety improvements, following several high-profile fatal crashes.

There have been 15 deaths on the A34 since 2016.

Highways England will be closing risky lay-bys, improving the signage and providing more lighting.

Wantage MP Ed Vaizey saide that he was "Delighted to hear that 2 Highways England A34 schemes (have been) merged to create 1 A34 Oxford Enhancements scheme delivering approx 11 safety improvements along the A34 between the M4 & M40. HE also working with @OxfordshireCC to evaluate potential for road enhancement at Botley junction".

The A34 Action Group said it was pleased to see some improvements, but said the plans were not sufficient: "People are disappointed to see that while Highways England have responded to public concerns for safety, the proposed plans are not sufficient to match the risks known by local residents." The group said all slip roads that "are below standard" should be upgraded at the same time.
